Cyclizar functions as one of the best support monsters for offensive teams in the game. Being both normal and dragon grants it useful immunity to ghost-type attacks as well as resistances to fire, electric, and water moves.
Its claim to fame is the move Shed Tail. When used Shed Tail reduces Cyclizar's HP by half, puts a substitute in its place, and switches it out immediately.
This plus its hidden ability Regenerator (restores 33% of max HP when switched out), allows it to regain most HP lost setting up the substitute for its teammate.
So, for a mere 17% of its HP it passes a very healthy substitute to a teammate and allows you to switch out instantly. Also, Cyclizar has a base speed of 121 so it will definitely outspeed most non-choice scarfed opponents.
Being normal and dragon grants Cyclizar a big diverse movepool with attacks like Ice Spinner, U-turn, Iron Head, Overheat, and Draco Meteor at its disposal.
All is not great for the motorcycle lizard, however. It's frail with base defenses both at 65 and an HP stat of 70. In addition, it is weak against Fighting type moves which are super common in generation 9.
Cyclizar has access to many offensive moves but lacks the raw offensive stats to do significant damage with them. He is best left to a supporting role with some moves to prevent it from being walled.
Tera Type: Steel or Fairy works well to counter its major weaknesses (Fairy, Ice, and Fighting, respectively). The best ability for Cyclizar is Regenerator as it allows you to spam Shed Tail often. The best item for Cyclizar when using this set is Leftovers.
EV Spread: 252 HP / 252 Speed / 4 Attack - The best nature for Cyclizar for this set is Jolly (+ Speed / - Special Attack).
Move | Power | Type | Accuracy | Effect |
---|---|---|---|---|
Shed Tail | - | Normal | 100 | Creates a substitute using 1/2 of its health and switches spots with a teammate |
Ice Spinner | 80 | Ice | 100 | Destroys existing terrain |
Rapid Spin | 50 | Normal | 100 | Removes hazards from your side of the field and boosts the user's speed by one stage |
Knock Off | 65 | Dark | 100 | Removes opposing Pokemon's item and doubles in damage if it does so |
This is the ultimate utility set allowing Cyclizar to do a number of things to support its team. The most important is passing subs allowing team members to set up.
This set also removes items with Knock Off, field hazards with Rapid Spin, and terrain with Ice Spinner. However, if you find yourself in a one-on-one situation with an opposing Fighting type Pokemon you will be in trouble.
You could use Tera Blast and terastalize into a fairy for those scenarios.
EV Spread: 252 HP / 252 Speed / 4 Sp. Attack - The best nature for Cylizar for this set is Timid (+ Speed / - Attack).
Move | Power | Type | Accuracy | Effect |
---|---|---|---|---|
Shed Tail | - | Normal | 100 | Creates a substitute using 1/2 of its health and switches spots with a teammate |
Draco Meteor | 130 | Dragon | 90 | Lowers your special attack by 2 stages |
Overheat | 130 | Fire | 90 | Lowers your special attack by 2 stages |
Thunderbolt | 90 | Electric | 100 | Has a 10% chance to cause paralysis |
Cyclizar's base special attack is 85, so don't expect to OHKO much at full health with this set. The strength of a build like this lies in its surprise factor.
Most will probably be expecting the typical Cyclizar set seen in Smogon battles so you could sneak in a KO or two. Like the other set, Tera Blast can be included without much of an issue.
EV Spread: 252 HP / 252 Attack / 4 Speed - The best nature for Cyclizar for this set is Adamant (+Attack / - Sp. Attack).
Move | Power | Type | Accuracy | Effect |
---|---|---|---|---|
Shed Tail | - | Normal | 100 | Creates a substitute using 1/2 of its health and switches spots with a teammate |
Shift Gear | - | Steel | - | Boosts Attack by 1 stage and speed by 2 |
Dragon Claw | 80 | Draong | 100 | No additional effect |
Body Slam | 80 | Normal | 100 | May cause paralysis |
Cyclizar's base attack is 95 and coupled with a boost from Shift Gear, can allow you to cause a decent chunk of damage to opponents that don't resist its STAB attacks.
If you are worried about fairies, Iron Head can be used with the added bonus of scoring super effective hits on opposing rock-type pokemon.
Overall, Cyclizar is an excellent support Pokemon but is severely outclassed as a solely offensive one. Now, offensive sets can be a good way to surprise opponents but are largely unreliable due to the paltry damage output.
When it comes to lore, Cyclizar is one of the most interesting Pokemon I've seen in a while. When Cyclizar first leaked, I and many others thought the cyclizar evolution paths were one of the two legendaries, Koraidon and Miraidon.
Of course, this was not the case as it is actually the present-day version of the futuristic Miraidon and pre-historic Koraidon. This also means that the box legendaries are not legendary at all, rather they are just rare in our timeline.
This is unique among legendary Pokemon in the franchise as the Pokemon that adorns the box art seem to be as common as Cyclizar in their respective timelines!
Great lore, phenomenal support options, and a nice offensive move pool make Cyclizar worth consideration for your next team build.
