In Yu-Gi-Oh Cross Duel, there are 2 forms of currency you can use to purchase cards.
Of the two, the easiest to farm are Gems as they are given as rewards for completing various aspects of the game. Crystals, however, require you to purchase them with real-world currency.
If you decide to purchase crystals instead of farming gems in Cross Duels, you will end up dumping a small fortune into the game to get the cards you want.
This is due to the fact that you cannot simply buy the cards you need, rather you have to purchase a pack of cards and hope the ones you want are in there.
Personally, I'd rather pay $30 or $40 for the game outright and then DLC whenever it comes out than be stuck in a "pay-to-win" situation but I digress..
Cross Duel gives you the ability to earn a substantial amount of gems by completing the challenges in the Challenge Duel area.
To access this area, head to your home screen. Then, click the menu icon (3 horizontal lines) in the top-right area of your screen.
From there, select the Challenge Duel option.
Now, you'll be presented with a plethora of challenges that can reward you with 50 gems a piece. The challenge duels have various requirements that range from activating unique monster abilities to activating spell and trap cards in a set order.
I found some of them, particularly the Magician of Black Chaos challenge, very difficult. Most are not too bad though. The Gilford The Lightning Challenge shown in the video below was moderately challenging.
Other than the Challenge Duels, you can fight in single-player mode through Tag Duels. The rewards are not as lucrative nor are they as easy to attain but every gem counts!
The Tag Duels offer crystal payouts based on the difficulty level of the opposing team. These are the First Victory Rewards
As you can see, the rewards are much lower than the Challenge Duels and the degree of difficulty is exponentially higher. The team you are fighting against has unlocked way more skill slots than you and probably has much stronger monsters.
It can be a goliath task to get your deck competition ready which is vastly different from other monster taming-esque games. But, the first step on your journey to being Queen or King of Games will be to farm those gems like Kuriboh's life depends on it.
